Most parents have a love, hate relationship with the humble bib. We love that they function as a clothing protector, acting as a force field between orange pumpkin and designer outfits but aren't as fond of the extra pile of washing they create.

How is this for a great idea then...a biodegradable disposable bib from Cocoboheme. If you just can't bear to scrap off the hardened weet-bix and broccoli then do what the royals do and toss it out! Printed on a potato starch material, it is an environmental solution to bib woes!

Day one of the school holidays here and the kids are already mumbling on about having nothing to do.

It was very timely then that I received a lovely email from Anne at Luce Handmade telling me all about her gorgeous new project. TwoDegrees will be the umbrella in which many unique, Australian, hand crafted projects will be launched.

The first being natural rubber stamp sets featuring local Australian landscapes and made from natural vulcanised red rubber. Each is mounted on reclaimed Tasmanian Celery Top pine including foam cushioning so are perfectly safe for little hands and mouths should they make their way there! In the typical style of Anne Mason, the stamp sets are superbly packaged in a handmade bag made from organic materials and finished with a divine letterpress tag.

We do endeavour to show our readers things that are both beautiful and accessible...however these were just too adorable not to feature.

Kast van een Huis is a dutch company, translating loosely to mean ' a barn of a house'. These cityscape closets are standouts in the collection; functioning as storage as well as a unique room divider when a few are placed in a row. The design is based on the canalhouses, famous in Amsterdam..and we just love them!

They are not yet available in Australia, but it is always nice to dream......

What an amazing year we have had. Our launch into Sydney was a resounding success and our continued growth in Melbourne has been very exciting. The year isn't quite over though and we plan to end it on a high with our last fair for the year at Brighton Town Hall. Starting tomorrow and running through until Saturday, our grand finale will not disappoint.

Even from these beautiful images, its hard to image just how divine the range from Lipp Design really is. So beautiful was her display at Magnolia Square Malvern last week, that she took out the Visual Merchandising award for the second time!

Artist Pipp Compton gracefully uses a melody of different mediums in her eclectic collection of art. From gorgeous gift tags to serene papers and one-off illustrations Pip carries her fanciful flair throughout the range.

We are giddy with excitement with only days to go before our Sydney Christmas event. And even more delighted with the announcement that British illustrator Mandy Sutcliffe will be coming all the way from England to visit us at Magnolia Square!

Mandy is the beauty behind Belle and Boo, a captivatingly beautiful collection of illustrations centered around the carefree story-like lives of children, woodland creatures and other friendly folk. Each piece is reminiscent of times gone by, dotted with equal measures of quirk and naivety.

We were thrilled to collaborate with My Child, Paperklip and Little Bird Photography to bring you a delightful new craft series. Gorgeous little hearts that are a pleasure to make and encourage creative time between parent and child...great excuse to grab the scissors and get crafting!

We had fun pouring over the mag, playing 'spot the clever Magnolia Square retailer'! Gracing the pages we found And Me Too, RedBerry, we heart books, Kindergallery, Huckleberry Lane, Koolaman Designs to name a few.

Now, i must be off....nothing like a coffee and a good book!

Sweet Dream Cakes, headed up by baking genius, Yogi Johnstone, creates delicious morsels of edible art.

What began as a solution to a party cake dilemma has now evolved into a bespoke cake and cookie service were very rarely is the same cake made twice. Catering for children's birthdays to corporate girts and weddings, there isn't much Yogi can't create...and she does like a good challenge!

Sweet Dreams Cakes were a hit with the Tiny and Smalls at the July Magnolia Square in Sydney, where many little guys and gals were spotted munching away on a cookie wand. We choose the gorgeous animal stamped biccies for our 'favourite things' stand..and yes the taste test proved that they were as good as they looked!

Quack, Quack, who wouldn't be delighted arriving at this Duck themed party! We love the original idea...worlds away from princesses and super hero's...a visual feast of colour and style.

Not that we would expect anything less from the very stylish Suzi of Alannnah Rose stationary....here she offers up her tips for creating the perfect party...like this one held for her duck loving daughter recently.

- Start with the invitation. Our new kids range of invitations has been designed to be easy to theme. Pick a colour, pattern or element in the design and go from there. For our Little Duck theme we worked around the colour palette of red and white with a touch of yellow.

- Balloons and lanterns were used in red and white to introduce colour and to pick up on the polkadot pattern in the invitations.

- On the table clear glass candy jars were filled with red and white lollies, and finished with red and white polka dot ribbon.

- Flowers are also a great way to bring in colour and add a soft touch to the table - for the duck party we put a pretty mix of white and yellow and finished the white pots with red bows.

- Food choices also followed the colour palette - honey joys in red patty pans, cupcakes with icing ducks and homemade duck gingerbread seamlessly fit with the overall theme.

- Don't be afraid to mix and match patterns, and add little details. Patterned fabric around store bought drink bottles is a simple craft project with big effect. Ribbon is also a great inexpensive way of adding colour and festivity, so get creative.

- Think about your party theme and what games you can play to tie in with your theme - Felt was cut out a duck shape to play pin the beak on the duck - an easy to make alternative to pin the tail on the donkey. Pass the parcel was done to the 'Five little ducks' song and a duck Pinata was found at a local balloon store.

-Finish on theme - Alannah Rose's new party bag tags add the perfect finishing touch to your party bag. A little rubber duck was added into each bag as a thank you for guests.

Gingerbread Ducks Recipe

Gingerbread is easy to make and kids love it. Cookie cutters are readily available in all sorts of shapes and sizes, so it's likely you'll find one to fit your invite theme. If you can't find the right shape, stick with a basic shape like circles and ice in different colours to make polkadots in your theme colours.

Arrange on white plates or pack individually in cello bags for a take home treat.

Preparation Time
30 minutes
Cooking Time
8 minutes

Ingredients

* 2 cups (300g) plain flour
* 1 tsp bicarb of soda
* 2 tsp ground ginger
* 90g butter
* 1/2 cup (80g) brown sugar
* 1/3 cup (125g) golden syrup
* 5cm biscuit cutter in shape of choice (we used a duck shape)
* Prepared icing

Directions

1. Sift flour, soda and ginger into a bowl. Place butter, sugar and golden syrup into a saucepan. Cook over low heat, until butter melts and sugar dissolves. Cool.
2. Pour the syrup into the flour mixture, and combine. Take the dough out of the bowl and knead until smooth. Cover with plastic and chill for 30 minutes.
3. Preheat oven to 180°C. Line two baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface until 5mm thick. Cut out shapes and carefully place onto trays. Bake for 8 minutes.
4. Cool biscuits on trays for 5 minutes, then onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Ice with Royal icing
* 1 eggwhite
* 1 1/4 cups pure icing sugar, sifted
* 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
* drops of food colour of choice

Using a fork, beat eggwhite in a bowl until foamy. Gradually beat in icing sugar until combined.
Stir in lemon juice. Add food colouring to desired colour. Decorate gingerbread with icing. Set aside for 20 minutes or until set. Serve.

With a new baby in their lives (Chloe - now 3), bee and tree owners Larn and Joe saw the culmination of several things. They became more and more interested in the benefits of organic produce including clothing. And for Larn, a new creative project was perfect to bring balance to the days spent at home with Chloe.

Bee and tree aims to create comfortable, design-oriented organic pieces for bubbas. Little creatures, namely these little owls and Mimi the Mouse featured in this range are brought to life by artist Jane Reiseger

Sweet William is made up of sisters, Shelley, Paula and Jeanine spread from New Zealand to Melbourne. Apart by many miles but together in their passionate for creating all manner of interesting things. Sweet William was named after a pet Persian cat and the flower, Sweet William which represents friendship - a name with both meaning and a sense nostalgia.

"We draw inspiration from all over the place - motherhood, markets, magazines, blogs, film, music, art, design, nature, colour, pattern, etc., and we have a thing for the past, especially old children’s books and vintage fabrics. Illustrating is at the core of Sweet William. We try and keep our products unique by incorporating our very own original artwork."

Paula is the illustrator, her drawings are incorporated into products by Jeanine and Shelley, who love to sew. Recycling and up cycling are key elements in the designs; most of the craft materials are thrifted and or vintage from papers, fabrics, buttons and old games.

Katie from We Heart Books takes us through her favourite book of the moment.....

From the moment I set eyes on Ida Pearle’s work, I was so impressed by her ability to capture both the activity and stillness of childhood. Her figures of children are absolutely mesmerising.

Ida is a young New York artist and already making a big impression internationally. When I learnt that her medium is collage I was gob-smacked – each part of her illustrations is cut and glued by hand… And yet she includes such detail and maintains incredible fluidity in every image.

Ida’s choice of papers is stunning – origami and other decorative paper is featured and contrasted beautifully.

Ida’s first children’s book, A Child’s Day: An Alphabet of Play is an alphabet book with a difference. Clearly touched by an artist’s hand, there is no room for C is for Cat in this book – try C is for Catch, D is for Dance… and Z is for Zoom! A child and his or her activities are the theme, providing both an incredible showcase of Ida’s talent and room for a child’s involvement and emulation.

We have imported Ida’s book directly from the US for the We Heart Books store, and it took pride of place on our table at Magnolia Square Sydney. You can imagine our joy when we discovered that across the way from us, our friends from Kindergallery had Ida’s stunning Alphabet cards. It would be a very lucky child (and mum) to be given both Ida’s cards for the wall and the book for bedtime reading.

There is always lots of love flying around the Magnolia Square office with beautiful things being presented to us all the time..such was the case with the heavenly Little Bubble and Tree which we all agreed just had to be a part of Magnolia Square.

Only 9 months into the business, we have witnessed an expanding product range and a rapidly growing fan base, all loving the nostalgic collection of children's garments and accessories and of course the divine Kelly at the helm.

We would like to share with you Kelly's experience at Magnolia Square Sydney:

"What can I say, another beautiful Magnolia Square event. This was my third time showing at Magnolia Square, and it seems to just get bigger and better every time. The fellow retailers and crafters you meet are so inspiring to be around, you really form a strong bond with a few that develop into new friendships to take away with you....not to mention the extra shopping you do while you are there for the 3 days of course!

The venue was perfect and the way it was decorated made you feel like you were part of something really special. The buzz we all felt at opening time 2pm on the Thursday was excellent, and it only increased by the response from the public. Most were absolutely blown away with the high quality of retailers, and attention to detail the organisers put into the venue.

For me, I am just 9 months into my business - so taking my range up to Sydney (from Melbourne) was a fantastic opportunity to show off my kids kaftans to a new audience. I was so overwhelmed with the feedback I received, and to then to have wholesale enquiries - was just icing on the cake! I would love to make the journey back up in November, for I believe it will be bigger and better with Christmas spirit and by everyone telling their friends how magical it really was.

Our first Magnolia Square in Sydney proved a success not only for our savvy shoppers but also for our smallest critics.

A delicious cupcake from Sparkle Cupcakery and a scrumptious cookie from Sweet Dream Cupcakes filled the tummy and set the scene for a fun day ahead. Next stop was the lmnop colouring table where chubby hands played Picasso and went to work on mini masterpieces while Mum and Dad enjoyed a coffee at the cafe.

It was then time to wind down on the We Heart Books story mat. Little faces watched and listened, enthralled by the beautiful books being read by our resident story tellers Lou and Katie.

We look forward to seeing all the Tiny and Smalls back again in November!

The Red Balloon is one of those books that literally stops people in their tracks. When we had it on display at our Magnolia Square stand in Brighton, people of all ages couldn’t help but stop to stare at the beautifully arresting cover.

It’s no wonder this book is so well-known by mums and grandmas alike. Written and directed by documentary film maker Albert Lamorisse, and starring his 5-year-old son Pascal it first appeared way back in 1956.

The story follows Pascal who befriends a red balloon – one that seems to have a mind of its own! Lamorisse managed to create a balloon with personality, which is both protector and friend to Pascal. Despite many obstacles that get in their path, Pascal and the balloon do not give up on their unconventional and unconditional friendship…

The large format of this book does wonderful justice to the photography that alternates between black and white and colour. The scenes of Pascal running through the wet and misty streets of Paris are simply spectacular and incredibly atmospheric.

The Red Balloon can be hard to track down in Australia – but is available from We Heart Books store. Alongside the book, we also have a unique 3D concertina card sourced from Mrs Eliot Books. Really a piece of art, this would be a gorgeous decoration in a nursery.

We can’t wait to have these beautiful products on display at Randwick next week!

Tinplate trains, windup robots and spinning tops were loads of fun but nothing says 50's childhood like a sock monkey. Toys from yesteryear are enjoying quite a renaissance of late; the appeal being the intrinsic charm that comes from a hand worked piece.

Mothers first crafted these little chaps for children during the Great Depression using red heel socks. From such humble beginnings, the sock monkey now enjoys an iconic status is both re-purposed art and craft sects and pop culture.

Sock Monkeys born at Red Wagon are luckier than most, made from traditional red heel socks and gifted with berets, neck scarves and pretty pinafores.

Kindergallery will be at Magnolia Square in Sydney to present a collection of works from leading artists around the world.

Meredith Gaston is one such artist. Currently based in Berlin but originally from Sydney, Meredith's naive line drawings of children, trees and birds are stunningly simple in their form. Have you met Madlenka?

As soon as you pick up this gorgeous hardcover you are introduced to this sweet little girl through a die-cut window in the jacket. Instantly, you are enveloped in her world - New York City; 'In the universe, on a planet, on a continent, in a country, in a city, on a block, in a house, in a window, in the rain, a little girl named Madlenka finds out her tooth wiggles.'

Madlenka knows everyone in her large and very multicultural neighbourhood on the south part of Manhattan Island and when she discovers a loose tooth she wants to tell everyone! As she skips through the city streets we also get to know her neighbours: the French baker, the Indian newsagent, the Italian ice-cream man, the Latin American grocer, a retired opera singer from Germany, an African American school friend, and the Asian shopkeeper.

Author Peter Sis creates the most amazingly rich and intricate blue-grey washed New York streetscapes in this story but the real magic comes from the use of die-cut windows through which Madlenka catches glimpses of her neighbours' lives in their former countries. Bright, light, cheerful and captivating, Madlenka dances through the illustrations always in colour, twirling her yellow umbrella as she goes.

Sis uses the text in his story to wind around the illustrations mirroring Madlenka's windy journey through the street blocks. The visual and textural beauty of the design of this picture book will give adults as much joy as the story gives children.

Borrowing from his real life tale of moving to the US from Czechoslovakia, in Madlenka Peter Sis has created an endearing character and a really beautiful tale of the diverseness of community and what we can learn from those living in our neighbourhoods.

Cuter than ever and right on trend were these darling little boots from Chookleaf at Tiny & Small, last week in Brighton. If you follow fashion then you'll appreciate how very up to the minute this fancy footwear is. You see yellow is all over catwalks from London to New York.

According to the experts we can all wear it, just find the shade that is right for you! Canary yellow, school bus yellow, daffodil, chartreuse and the list goes on. In fact Pantone, the worlds colour authority, have selected mimosa (a lovely yellow hue) as their colour for 2009.

The latest from lmnop is online now and just waiting to be opened. The issue is fittingly and delightfully dedicated to those 26 characters called our alphabet. I dont want to give away too much because there is a lovely surprise in store, but suffice to say that issue 7 just sings!

Here are a few of my favourite bits ... look at this cute little guy "building" the vowels. This photo shoot must have been so much fun!

I have always loved buying beautiful books for my children but until yesterday it hadn't occurred to me that heaven could actually lay right there on the pages. The title I am referring to (and obsessed with) is Wonder Bear illustrated by Tao Nyeu.

The pages of this book without words quite literally sing with joy. Immediately I am torn between preserving the illustrations behind glass, displaying it on the shelf (cover facing out) or letting the kids paw through it and create their own stories. We may need 3 copies!

For the most superbly curated collection of books for little people look no further than Lou and Katie from we heart books. I have just found myself in THE most divine website I've stumbled upon in a while. Have to say I am feeling a bit left out, cant believe I have only just discovered this! I am referring to the work of kiki & polly artist Lisa Golightly (loving her name as well!).

Lisa and her family are based in Portland, Oregon. She is a portraiture artist but not in the traditional sense. After the birth of her children she began experimenting with ways to incorporate their photographs into her work. The result is just breath taking. Simple, classic yet utterly contemporary.

Inspired from an early age by her artistic father, Lisa has combined her beautiful craft with a young family. These influences are very obvious in her work; there is a strong familial aesthetic. The pieces are unpretentious and heart warming.

In learning a little more about Lisa and the inspiration behind her work we discovered that bloesemkids had done an openhouse feature on their blog. There is something lovely about the houses of creative people ...

I dashed off a quick email to Lisa last night to ask her about international orders and was very pleased to hear she is currently working on a portrait which is bound for Australia ... for more about the ordering process click here.

Kiki & Polly have also developed a body of printed work available on the one stop craft shop etsy. I particularly love this set of 12 counting cards, so subtle with just a hint of colour. The simple way they have been displayed on the twine with tiny pegs is just perfect!

It's ironic that modern technology gives us access to the one off, hand worked and heart felt objects we seem to be yearning for the world over!

It's no secret that at Magnolia Square we looooove the soft creations by maiike's Aly Peel. My own house features quite a bit of it! Sooo ... we are very excited to annouce that maiike are hitting the road and coming to Sydney for our July event at Randwick. Look out for maiike in the winter issue of my child magazine which comes out later this month.

In a few weeks we will peek into the maiike studio and talk to Aly about the inspiration behind her tiny, tactile critters.

Mum where does the sun go at night?

This morning I whipped into Readings with a particular book purchase in mind where upon I was immediately distracted by a tonne of new craft titles (more about that later) and then I set my eyes on this. It was the cover illustration that attracted me so I opened the book to find the answers to questions such as "Do fish know who their parents are?" and "Why does the moon change shape?" Finally, someone is addressing the real questions that our children ask!!

The illustrator is Amy Schimler, a mixed media and collage artist who has infact drawn the pictures for many childrens books. Amy is also a textiles designer and an illustrator for many BIG names. She is inspired by colour, pattern and texture and this divine book (called by the way, Why is the sky blue?) seems to encapsulate all of those qualities. It has brown sturdy pages which I'm sure are eco friendly and lots of flaps and sliding bits to amuse young readers. Best of all it answers those hard questions to which I often respond "Daddy knows a lot about world population statistics and he'll be home soon!"

Amoungst the cute at the last Magnolia Square, behind a white picket fence, sat the very gorgeous Little Bubble and Tree.
